Scope of the Challenge

"During the last 20 years, HIV/AIDS has assumed pandemic proportions, spreading from the most severely affected region, sub-Saharan Africa, to all corners of the world, and leaving an unprecedented path of death and devastation…According to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), more than 65 million individuals worldwide have been infected with HIV since the epidemic began, more that 25 million of these individuals have lost their lives to the disease, and more than 14 million children have been orphaned by the disease.."

From the United States Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Act of 2003.

The Specific Challenge

There are approximately 80 to 100 orphan children in the East African Village of Makobe, located in the Shimba Hills region a few miles from Mombasa.

These children are orphaned due to the AIDS pandemic that is currently sweeping the nation of Kenya. The local people are challenged with caring for these children by moving them from one family to another sharing the burden of childcare across the community. This effort creates significant hardships for the caring adults of Makobe.

Helping Hands of Baraka

The focus project of the Baraka Foundation is centered in the East African Village of Makobe, Kenya. The goal is to establish a working model that can be duplicated throughout Africa. The orphan children are victims of the African AIDS pandemic which has put a significant strain on the remaining people in Makobe. The mission of the Baraka Foundation is to house, clothe, protect, educate, and nurture all of these orphan children while equipping them to become educated, responsible adults.
